Post-quantum authentication: Why organizations should start testing certificate ecosystems now

"Prevention is cheaper than a breach"

While much of the focus in post-quantum cryptography (PQC) centers on protecting data from ‘harvest now, decrypt later’ threats, authentication systems face a distinct and complex challenge. Transitioning to post-quantum authentication involves more than just swapping algorithms; it requires evaluating how new, larger certificate chains and cryptographic processes interact with legacy infrastructure, hardware security modules, and diverse software ecosystems.

Microsoft emphasizes that PQC readiness is a multi-year effort rather than a single technology upgrade. Because enterprise environments often rely on decades-old PKI infrastructure and embedded devices with fixed cryptographic assumptions, organizations must begin preparing today to identify hidden dependencies and potential compatibility gaps.

To facilitate this, Microsoft launched the PQC TLS Pilot Program in August 2026. This initiative allows eligible certificate authorities to test the Module-Lattice-Based Digital Signal Algorithm (ML-DSA-87) in controlled, non-production environments. By utilizing these pilot certificates on supported Windows 11 systems, organizations can assess:

  • Whether applications can correctly validate post-quantum certificates.
  • How larger certificate sizes impact performance, handshake timing, and storage.
  • The readiness of network monitoring and HSM infrastructure.

Actionable steps for security leaders and PKI administrators include:

  1. Inventorying all certificate-dependent systems and mapping trust relationships.
  2. Engaging vendors to assess their post-quantum roadmaps.
  3. Identifying long-lived infrastructure that may require lengthy upgrade cycles.
  4. Establishing non-production testbeds to evaluate interoperability safely.

By treating post-quantum authentication as an ongoing program rather than a future migration project, organizations can surface operational risks early and build a roadmap that ensures a smooth transition to a quantum-resistant future.
